Planning Your Career Path
No matter where you are in school, there are things you can do right now to start building your future.
Grades 5–6
Explore Broadly
- Take a variety of classes — try things that are new to you
- Join clubs, teams, and activities that sound interesting
- Talk to adults about their jobs — what do they actually do all day?
- Start noticing what subjects and activities energize you
- Don't worry about choosing — this is the time to explore everything
Grades 7–8
Start Identifying Interests
- Pay attention to which electives you enjoy most
- Participate in career exploration events at school
- Set academic goals — what subjects do you want to get better at?
- Try new things: robotics club, art class, volunteering, sports
- Start thinking about what kind of work excites you
Grades 9–10
Narrow Your Focus
- Take advanced classes in subjects you enjoy
- Look for internships, job shadowing, or mentoring opportunities
- Attend college fairs and career events
- Start building skills that connect to careers you're curious about
- Research what education different careers require
Grades 11–12
Commit to a Direction
- Build a strong resume with activities, work, and achievements
- Secure meaningful work experience (jobs, internships, projects)
- Research colleges, trade programs, apprenticeships, or military paths
- Prepare applications — and have backup options
- Connect with mentors or professionals in your areas of interest
